Safety first – 4 good reasons for smart home security
Share
My hometown of Hamburg is beautiful, and I really enjoy living here. However, despite the pandemic, the number of burglaries in my neighborhood is rising again, and I'm slowly feeling the need to protect myself a bit better. I'm not alone in this: Several million households in Germany had purchased an alarm system by the end of 2021 , 2.5 million of which had purchased a smart version for DIY installation. These smart versions, which are operated via mobile phone, are particularly cost-effective and are therefore becoming increasingly popular. But is smart home security worth it? Is self-installed burglar protection really effective?
1. Burglary rates are rising again
The Hamburg Police's annual burglary report offers a short answer: After a comparatively quiet year in 2020, the number of burglaries in Hamburg rose again by almost 70% in autumn 2021 , with a 43% increase between September and October alone. These figures are leading to uncertainty among Hamburg residents, who are increasingly inquiring about protection options. The police's conclusion is clear: an alarm system alone does not provide protection. First and foremost, secure windows and doors with special fittings are essential for building security, as they ensure that burglars are deterred by the mechanical features alone. Regardless of whether you live in an apartment or a detached house, a conversion is definitely worthwhile. Window sensors like those included in our Smart Home Security products are used to support this.

2. A smart home alarm system provides additional protection
An alarm system provides additional protection: Studies show that even a visibly installed alarm system reduces the likelihood of a break-in. Police crime prevention experts know that what matters in a break-in is that it happens quickly and goes unnoticed. Anything that slows down burglars or exposes them to the gaze of attentive neighbors makes the house or apartment less attractive as a burglary target. A rule of thumb is that a break-in must be successful within five minutes, otherwise the perpetrators will give up. Smart home alarm systems can provide these delays!
3. Combined security systems provide the most effective protection
Smart burglary protection is effective! Motion detectors, cameras, and sirens are proven to deter burglars. Tamper sensors on windows and doors quickly trigger alarms, thus supporting burglary protection. But our smart alarm systems can do even more: Combined with the app, they send a real-time notification as soon as an intruder or tampering is detected. In addition, in conjunction with our smart lights, lighting profiles can be created that make it appear as if someone is home.

4. Full control – even remotely
You remain in control of your smart home devices. Your smart burglar alarm system notifies you in real time when an alarm is triggered in your home. You decide what to do with the information: There's no automatic alert to a security company or the police; instead, it's sent to your smartphone or the smartphones of your registered contacts. You can easily check what's going on via the camera and respond accordingly.
5. Conclusion
A smart home alarm system is a useful addition to well-secured windows and doors. You can easily monitor your home remotely and intervene accordingly if you receive an alarm.
