Late adopters – The beginning of a wonderful friendship

My mother is what you would commonly call a late adopter. To this day, she still reads the daily newspaper in print, listens to linear radio, and even—unbelievably for me, a streaming fan—subscribes to a TV guide. She doesn't have a single social media account, and you can't reach her via WhatsApp or Messenger; you have to call her landline, and although she's certainly capable of using the internet, she hardly ever uses it. She's not really old-fashioned; she has a very modern view of the world. She simply doesn't see the appeal of the digital world.

That changed dramatically last weekend: I installed several smart LED bulbs from Chuango in various lamps in my living room and was able to show them off while we were having coffee together.

As it slowly got darker, I said, "Wait a minute, let me quickly turn it up," and pulled out my smartphone. I quickly opened the DreamCatcher Life app, selected the first lamp, and set the brightness to 70 percent. Then I selected the second lamp in the corner and increased the brightness a bit there as well.

Mom is amazed. "How do you do that?" "It's so easy," I say, and because I want to show off a little, I quickly change the light color to "Comfort," so that the room is bathed in a wonderfully cozy orange-pink glow. "I can set any color I want here. I even have light-changing effects or a wake-up light—I programmed that in the bedroom!"

And then something happens that I would never have expected from my mom: "Show me!" she says, reaching for my smartphone, "I want to try that out!" No sooner said than done: First she tries out different presets – she thinks Forest Mood and Spring are beautiful – then she moves on to the free color selection. The Chuango light bulbs have millions of adjustable colors, and she is completely amazed at how easy the lights are to use. "That would be something for us at home too!" she says happily, and I can't help but laugh. Mom, of all people, wants to install smart lights! But it really is perfect for differently lit reading nooks, workstations, and the large dining table, I think so too.

We order several bulbs at once and come up with a plan: We won't tell Dad at first. We'll install the bulbs together (although she could probably do it on her own!), and then she can surprise him with the same trick while we're watching a crime drama together: "I'll just make the light brighter!"

“He’ll be amazed!” says my mom, and laughs.
